Case Study: Overcoming a Flying Phobia with hypnotherapy

Cartoon airplane taking off

background

The client, a middle-aged professional, sought therapy for a debilitating phobia of flying. They experienced intense anxiety at the thought of boarding an aircraft, leading to physical symptoms such as sweating, rapid heartbeat, and nausea. This fear had prevented them from taking flights for business or leisure, significantly impacting their career advancement and personal life, as they missed important work opportunities and family holidays.

Therapeutic TreatmenT

The treatment plan incorporated a combination of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), progressive relaxation techniques, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

Number of sessions

2 x 55 minute sessions

Therapeutic Approach

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing): This technique was used to process the traumatic memories associated with the turbulent flight. The client followed a series of guided eye movements while recalling the distressing event, which helped to desensitise the emotional impact and reframe the memory.

Progressive Relaxation: The client was taught progressive muscle relaxation techniques to reduce overall physical tension and anxiety. This involved tensing and then slowly releasing different muscle groups, promoting a state of deep relaxation.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming): NLP techniques were utilised to reprogram the client's thought patterns and emotional responses. Visualisation exercises helped the client imagine themselves flying calmly and confidently, reinforcing positive associations with air travel.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques): EFT, or "tapping," was employed to address the emotional component of the phobia. The client tapped on specific acupressure points while verbalising their fear of flying, which helped to reduce the intensity of their anxiety.

Session Breakdown:

Session 1:

The first session focused on building rapport and understanding the client's history with flying. EMDR was introduced to process the traumatic flight experience. The client was also guided through progressive relaxation exercises to establish a baseline of calm.

Session 2:

In the second session, the client practised NLP visualisation techniques and EFT tapping. They reported feeling more at ease and less anxious about the upcoming flight. The session concluded with a comprehensive relaxation exercise, integrating all the techniques learned.

Outcome:

Following the second session, the client felt significantly more confident about flying. They successfully boarded a three-hour flight, experiencing no symptoms of anxiety, fear, or panic. They reported feeling a sense of accomplishment and newfound freedom, as they could now travel by air without distress.

This case demonstrates the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for flying phobias and combining EMDR, progressive relaxation, NLP, and EFT in treating specific phobias. The client’s rapid progress and positive outcome highlight the potential for brief, intensive therapeutic interventions to yield substantial improvements in a short period.
